Deer Park Heights is a scenic drive and animal encounter taking you through a working deer farm, 550 meters above Queenstown. This scenic experience provides views of the Whakatipu basin, LOTR movie sets, and gorgeous animals you can feed and see. Deer park heights originally opened in 1966 and has so much history and sights to offer. Stroll walkways or picnic at impressive alpine tarns at the top of the hill, enjoy this historic location at your own pace.

Visiting

Deer Park Heights offers access to passenger vehicles up to 8 seats to explore the property from the comfort of your own. Pack a picnic lunch and camera, or put on your walking boots for a mountain stroll at dedicated walking spots.

The cost of entry is $55 per vehicle and valid for single use during daylight hours. When you book online you will receive an access code to enter at the toll gate. Access is limited to passenger vehicles only with no biking, walking, or pets allowed on the property. Please bring a NZ $2 coin to get sheep pellets to feed the animals.

Very highly recommended! It’s really, really nice, the sheep are kind, and one bucket of feed just two dollars , so it’s easy to use and share. You can admire Queenstown Airport from the mountains and take photos with them. If there is a warning sign, pay attention to safety. Others, we think are very good, we must come to visit.

Stunning scenery and very peaceful. Easy walks and would recommend a picnic if you have the time. Adorable animals and lovely feeding experience. Met the owner Bob, super friendly and humorous guy 🙂 would love to visit again if we come back to Queenstown. **Must book online ahead of time! We rocked up on a weekday and it was fully booked

I’ve been to Queenstown so many times, but I can’t believe I missed this incredible spot until my first visit recently. On the first day, we didn’t realize we needed to book in advance, and when we got there, the sign said it was fully booked for the whole day—apparently, they only allow about 80 cars. So, I booked for the next day, and we got there in the morning. The entrance was super easy with the code they emailed. We had the best day in the park—cute animals, an unreal experience, and amazing views of the mountains, Queenstown city, and even the airport. If you’re in town, don’t miss this!

During our visit to Deer Park Heights last June, we purchased our entrance tickets for $55 per vehicle on their website, which included an access code required for entry prior to entering the premises. The panoramic views of Queenstown were truly breathtaking, offering a unique perspective similar to a bird's eye view of the town. My family and I highly recommend visiting this area! Before driving into the farm area, there's a designated spot where visitors can purchase food ($2 coins) for the animals. Although we didn't buy any this time, we DEFINITELY plan to on our next trip. The area wasn't very crowded during our visit, which provided ample opportunities for photography without the interference of large crowds. Additionally, Deer Park Heights features numerous "Lord of the Rings" film locations, which adds an element of cinematic history to the visit. A short 10 to 20 minutes walk-up to a higher point rewards us with an even better view of Lake Wakatipu. We encountered various animals such as goats, deer, and cows, which made navigating the vehicle difficult. We had to drive cautiously to avoid hitting any animals due to blind spots. At one point, we were stuck in the middle of the road for a while because many goats were wandering around our vehicle. I couldn't open the door or wind down the window, fearing I might hit them, and I didn't have any food for them. To make this easier, it's better to buy their animal food to lure them away from the vehicle, ensuring a smoother drive through the area. Otherwise, you might find yourself stuck like us😂, as the animals often approach the car for food. Overall, Deer Park Heights offers a remarkable combination of natural beauty, photography opportunities, and unique wildlife encounters, making it a must-visit destination for anyone travelling to Queenstown.

This was the best $55 plus $6 for animal food we spent in Queenstown. The scenery is stunning and the animals gave us all a laugh - especially the goats. Perfect way to use up time before our flight. Highly recommended.
